Sadly the topography of the country (much of the countryside is under sea level having been reclaimed) does not make it the biking Mecca of Europe – nor indeed the food capital. The country’s traditional past (particularly with Indonesia) does make for an interesting variety of restaurants. Try the pea and ham concoctions with apple sauce – not “nouvelle cuisine”, but quite tasty. On balance may be better to leave the bike at home (unless en route) and savour some of the other delights! Often called the Netherlands, the Netherlands was actually an individual section of the whole country which gradually gave its name to the whole. Touring and Rides Boring bits Drinking and Driving Level of alcohol in blood over 0.05% = severe penalties including fines, withdrawal of licence, fine and imprisonment. In case of illegal parking police can impose on-the-spot fines or tow the vehicle away. Fuel Unleaded petrol (95 and 98 octane available). No leaded petrol (but lead substitute additive available). Credit cards accepted at most filling stations – check with card issuer before travel. Lights Dipped headlights. Interestingly, dipped/undipped headlights cannot be used during daytime and when their use inconveniences other traffic or pedestrians. Insurance third party compulsory.
